Training safety, liability waiver and guardian consent
Please read before signing. The adult waiver below includes a release of negligence claims and affects your legal rights.
Training at your own pace
This introductory workshop uses instructor-guided partner practice and controlled drills. We will explain each activity and encourage you to work at a comfortable pace. You can ask questions, decline a drill or stop at any time. These precautions help manage risk but cannot remove it completely.
Understanding the risks
Self-defense training includes physical contact, partner drills, pad work, sudden movements and simulated confrontations. Possible injuries include bruises, strains, sprains and falls. Less commonly, training can result in serious injury, including joint or head injuries, disability or death. Activities may also cause emotional distress. Risks can arise from my actions, other participants, equipment, the premises or instruction. Training cannot guarantee safety or success in a real confrontation.
Participation and safety
I choose to participate voluntarily. I will follow instructions, use control, respect partners, tell the instructor about relevant participation limitations, and stop any activity that feels unsafe or causes pain. I may decline a drill or stop participating at any time. I will ask questions before taking part if anything is unclear.
Adult participants — release of liability
If I am 18 or older, I understand and accept the risks of participating. To the extent permitted by applicable law, I release Chris Friesen, doing business as Self-Defense Manitoba, and the instructors, assistants and volunteers delivering this workshop from claims for injury, death, loss or property damage arising from my participation, including claims arising from their negligence. I understand this releases legal rights, including the right to sue for those claims. This release does not exclude liability or rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Participants aged 12–17 — parent or legal guardian
I am the named participant’s parent or legal guardian, have read and understand the activity and risks described above, and consent to their participation. I will discuss safety instructions with them and provide relevant participation information to the instructor. This guardian consent records permission and acknowledgement of risk; it does not purport to waive the child’s legal rights or require the guardian to indemnify anyone against the child’s claims.
Electronic signature
Each adult participant must personally read and sign for themselves. For a participant aged 12–17, their parent or legal guardian must read and sign. A booking contact cannot sign for another adult. By typing my full name and ticking the agreement below, I intend to sign electronically and confirm I have read and understood the applicable terms. The exact wording, version, signer and acceptance time are retained with the booking. Contact chris@selfdefensemb.com with questions before signing.
